To pray for them is an obligation I feel I must take on since they all are responsible in some way for my comfort and support when I needed it. Threats to our survival and well-being, whether from the natural world or from what we may perceive as dangerous, have been part of every age. In such situations, our innate response mechanism is triggered and set into motion. Our stress response is a healthy, inborn ability that supplies what we need to help us cope with the threats in our lives. We get into trouble, however, when the number or size of these threats overwhelms our ability to cope with them, or when our response is prolonged or inadequate for the task.

Today we live in a world that has multiple sources of stress. Whereas our ancestors found most of their threats to be directed at their very survival, in this modern age many psychological situations and beliefs also act as stressors in our lives.

What we perceive as threats is unique to each one of us: while the identical situation may be defined by one person as highly stressful, another person may see it as an exciting challenge. Stress has been described as the potential source of many physical and emotional illnesses and diseases. We see it playing a role in our relationships and job experiences. We also find ourselves distracted and disturbed in our spiritual lives by the multiplicity of stresses and worries we carry.

Peace, the antithesis of stress, was a common theme of Jesus in his interactions with those around him. Many times he spoke of peace in terms of the blessing that it carries for us. In our faith journeys, prayer and spiritual reflection can offer us wonderful opportunities to manage our stresses and work through them.

Drawing close to God in prayer and Scripture can allow us to examine and consider our own lives and identify the stressors or our reactions to them. Being able to articulate and name what our problems are, and what our reactions tend to be, can help us find the peace we crave.

We may discover that we have tendencies to overreact to certain situations, or to not give enough attention to the problems we do have. Perhaps we see a threat where none exists. Increasing our awareness of the role of stress in our own lives, and praying through our struggles with stress, may help us find the peace we seek and also help us to live more healthy and blessed lives. The following reflections can be used anytime or anywhere. They begin with a verse or two of Scripture, move into a short meditation, and end with a prayer.

The prayer is meant to launch us into our own conversation with the Lord.

They think it is more important to pray for those who are grieving, who are suffering now. There is a longstanding tradition in the Catholic Church to pray for the souls of the deceased. How did this tradition come about and why is it still important today? The custom of praying for the dead is rooted in the very nature of heaven. The Bible indicates that there can be nothing imperfect in heaven.

At the same time, they have not made the choice to totally separate themselves from God. They may have expressed regret for their sins and been forgiven, but their love of God at the time of their death may not have been as profound and perfect as it should have been.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:.

CCC The souls of these individuals have not yet been completely purified of their sins. How can we describe Purgatory? A common description from Church tradition speaks of a cleansing fire. In particular, St. Paul records:. The imagery St. Paul uses is that of the refining of metals.

Prayers for Healing of Mind, Body, and Soul

Fire is used to test and refine precious metals by bringing them to their melting point. At this high temperature, anything impure which has not melted can then be removed. The pain is caused by being separated from God. We can imagine this as the refining fire of divine love, which purifies a soul and prepares it to enter heaven.

They continue to be important members of the Church, of the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ according to the belief in the communion of saints. We are able to assist the faithful departed by our prayers, just as they can also help us by their prayers CCC Prayers for the dead have been offered for many centuries.

The earliest reference in the Bible is found in the second book of Maccabees. Judas Maccabees was an important Jewish general of the second century before Christ. He led his army to success in a hard fought battle.

The following day he, along with his soldiers, returned to the battlefield to gather together the bodies of the soldiers who had fallen in battle. They wished to give them a respectful funeral. To their surprise, they found that the soldiers were wearing pagan amulets and had hidden them under their tunics. They had been taken from enemy soldiers who had died in a battle in Jamnia 1 Maccabees According to Deuteronomythese items should have been burned.

Instead, these soldiers hid them, most likely out of greed. Judas Maccabees and the surviving soldiers knew that they had committed a grave sin, an action that was forbidden by the Law. Yet they also knew that these men were otherwise good people, people who had died virtuously by courageously defending the law of God.Have you lost a loved one who passed away, or know someone who has?

The Prayer of St. Gertrude, below, is one of the most famous of the prayers for souls in purgatory. Gertrude the Great pictured at left was a Benedictine nun and mystic who lived in the 13th century. According to tradition, our Lord promised her that souls would be released from purgatory each time it is said devoutly. Whether or not this is actually the case, this is a great prayer for focusing on helping the Holy Souls in Purgatory nonetheless:.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.

Many of the Fathers of the Church, such as St. Augustine and St. John Chrysostom, considered prayers for souls in purgatory to be essential. While the sacrament of penance confession is essential for the forgiveness of sins, purgatory may still be necessary for many of us to satisfy the temporal punishment still due for venial and forgiven mortal sins. To get a better handle on what this means, think of a kid who breaks a window while playing ball.

He can, and should, apologize to the person whose window has been broken, but either he or his parents, or both! While the souls in purgatory can do nothing for themselves, their purification "pays for the damages" of their sins. It makes whatever restitution remains for these sins to God. For another good way to look at it, think of your soul at baptism as being bright white. In your daily life it picks up bits of grime from sin, much like snow in a city a few days after a winter storm.

Even with frequent confession many of us still need purgatory to really get our souls really spotless. Purgatory is more than just some sort of Divine Detergent, however. It prepares souls for their heavenly home! The time each soul spends there, and the severity of the pains it experiences, varies. However, our prayers for these souls can help alleviate their sufferings and help them reach heaven more quickly. Although they can no longer pray for themselves, they can and do pray for us as well out of gratitude!

In addition to saying prayers for souls in purgatory such as thesewe can help them by having masses said for the departed and by engaging in works of charity and sacrifice on their behalf.A friend asked the question: How do I pray for unbelievers? How do I pray effectively? I trust that every Christian regularly prays for family or friends or colleagues or neighbors who do not yet know the Lord.

And while we can and must pray for matters related to their lives and circumstances, the emphasis of our prayers must always be for their salvation. Here are some ways the Bible can guide our prayers. We begin with prayers for salvation. Each of these prayers seeks the same thing, but in a different way or from a different angle or using different language. Each of them is grounded in a specific text of Scripture.

Pray that God would circumcise their hearts. To have a circumcised heart symbolizes having a heart that is fully joined to God, fully submissive to him. Pray that God would give them a heart of flesh. The Bible contrasts a heart of flesh, a heart that is alive and responsive to God, to a heart of stone, a heart that is cold and unyielding.

Pray that God would work within these unbelievers to change their hearts.

12 Prayers for the Departed and Dearly Missed

Pray that God would put his Spirit within them. The great joy of salvation is being indwelled by God himself. Pray that God would grant this honor to those unbelievers, that he would choose to take up residence within them.

Pray that they would come to Christ. If unbelievers are to come to salvation, there is just one way. They must come through Christ and Christ alone.

Remember, too, that he is the one who calls them to come and to be relieved of the burden of their sin see Matthew Pray that God would open their hearts to believe the gospel.
